THE FIRST ANNUAL TOURNAMENT OF BEASTS
SUDBURY ACTION CENTRE FOR YOUTH + MUSAGETES

SUDBURY, CANADA | 2010
This project created in collaboration with the youth at the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth staged the First Annual Tournament of Beasts in Sudbury’s Memorial Park. The project featured a croquet competition between a half-dozen animals (raccoon, bear, wolf, rabbit, deer and moose but notably no cats or dogs) in response to a sign posted at the parks entrance what prohibited many things including golfing, cats and dogs. The croquet game was conceived as a catalyst to spark public discussion about the use and control of public spaces, specifically whether limitations and rules or encouraging use would result in safer and more vibrant public spaces. It also allowed young people who felt excluded from using this park to occupy the space in a joyful, playful way, that followed the rules of the sign to the letter.
