Tales for the Coming Age is a publication and public intervention project centred around new fables for this era of devastating human impact on the planet’s ecologies. Three short fables about human relationships with other species became small sharable books, which were gifted to the public by mysteriously placing them in public spaces shared with those species. The focus the tales is on moments where ideas about nature and ecology become complicated, and the world of humans entangles with that of other species. Each animal was paired with a plant species, somehow significant to the tale. In the case of the Canada Goose, for example, the plant selected was an indigenous wetland sedge that might have grown where we now have large expanses of grass. Seeds of these species were encapsulated into the biodegradable books so that any books not discovered would break down and potentially plant seeds in its wake. Alternatively, those that were taken by people could be planted in a space of their choosing. The aim of this project was to explore and share new ways of thinking about human relationships to the ecologies around us, with the conviction that many common ideas, stories and vocabularies about “nature” are no longer serving us (or any other species) very well.
